Workers protest at Mahmud Denims Ltd, Bangladesh - 2026
On Wednesday morning (January 7), protests took place at the garment factory named Mahmud Denims Limited in Shafipur, Kaliakair. It has been reported that the company has not paid the workers’ salaries for the past three months. Tensions had been rising inside the factory for several days over this issue. As a result, on the morning of the 7th of January, workers who came to the factory refused to join work and began protesting at the main gate. At one point, they blocked the Dhaka–Tangail road, halting traffic. After receiving the news, police arrived at the scene and tried to persuade the workers, but the workers became agitated. Later, when police fired tear gas shells, the workers dispersed and regrouped at the factory gate to continue their protest. Four people were injured during the police action. According to newspage Protidiner Bangladesh, Mohammad Halim, a factory worker, said: “We haven’t received our wages for three months. We live in rented houses, and the landlords are pressuring us for rent. We can’t even shop properly for food.” Mahmud Denims Ltd., founded in 2006, is part of Mahmud Group and according to Open Supply Hub a supplier to New Look Retailers (2024), Mango (2024), Benetton (2024), Kmart Australia (2025), Target Australia (2025) and Tesco Stores Ltd.
